Student Voice
Student leadership at Aldgate Primary School continues to grow in significance and will continue to be a focus of our school.
Student Parliament
Aldgate Primary Student Parliament is a student representative body which is made up of a Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and two Class Reps from each class. They meet 2 or 3 times a term after Term 1 elections. Parliament is led by the PM and discusses ideas and issues generated from the Parliament, class meetings or raised by the Head of State (principal). They are also involved in running school events.
Student Parliament’s goal is to improve the school experience of students and to be a real decision making body driven by authentic student voice.
Prime Minister Job Description
The Student Parliament Prime Minister (PM) is elected by the whole school. Their job is to lead the Student Parliament to improve the school experience for students. The PM will have ideas and election promises to work towards delivering. They will also listen to the ideas of the Parliament which have come from classes via their class reps.
The PM is the representative of all the students. They may be asked to perform official duties like meeting important visitors, showing them around and speaking about the school.
Class Representatives
Class Representatives (Reps) are the link between Classes and Student Parliament. Their job is to take ideas or issues from their class meetings to Student Parliament. They are also responsible for sharing what is happening in Student Parliament with their class.
Class Reps have a vote in Student Parliament and their votes are important in deciding what Student Parliament does.
An Aldgate PS Student Parliament Prime Minister Election will be called and held on specific day, towards the end of the previous academic year. The whole school, including staff, will have one vote for the Prime Minister (PM).
The PM election uses Preferential Voting.
Youth Environmental Leadership Program (YELP)
At Aldgate Primary School, our involvement in the Green Adelaide YELP (Young Environmental Leaders Program) reflects our deep commitment to sustainability and student voice. YELP empowers our student leaders to take meaningful action on environmental issues by connecting them with like-minded peers, local experts, and hands-on learning experiences. This aligns closely with our school's values of respect, responsibility, and care for the environment, while fostering leadership, critical thinking, and active citizenship in our students.
The candidates will all be listed on the Ballot Paper and voters number the boxes in order of their preferred PM.
Votes will be counted and preferences distributed until a single candidate has 50% + 1 vote of the total votes cast. This candidate will be declared the winner. The candidate with the next highest total and of opposite gender to the PM winner will be declared the Deputy PM.
At the start of an academic year, class Reps are voted for in class. Class teachers can use whichever voting system works best for their Class.
